Minor/Major Project: Rolling Calf - Studies and Initial Ideas

Influence Map
The Rolling Calf is a spirit in Jamaican folklore. They are believed to be the spirits of people (often butchers) who were wicked in their lifetime. The Rolling Calf always has the form of a bull, and is wrapped in chains that can be heard when they are nearby. They block the way of travelers (mostly at night), and chase them with the intention to cause harm.

Minor/Major Project: Tikbalang Heads

Rough brainstorm sketches
I looked back on my original Tikbalang post, and decided to work more on the head. The old heads seemed to go the "zombie" route, which doesn't fit into the Tikbalang's mythology. The creature is described as "a tall, bony humanoid creature with the head and hooves of a horse and disproportionately long limbs", with a mane made of sharp spines. They're supposed to scare and play tricks on travelers, and are also thought to be guards of "elemental kingdoms". I decided to explore giving the Tikbalang the teeth of a pig (seen on the skull sketch, as well as making the front protruding teeth sharp and menacing. I wanted the creature to appear to be somewhere between physical and supernatural, appearing to almost be made of just skin and bones.

Character Design: Additional Character Work and Links to Weekly Classes

Character Design: Flamboyant Sheriff - Environment Design

For this class we had to design an environment for a character. I was given a flamboyant sheriff.

Character Design: Poses

For this class we were put into groups and told to draw each other in various poses. Each pose was based on a character, including an elegant swordsman, a drunk and a bully.

Character Design: Steampunk

In Tuesday's character design class, we were each given a genre and told to come up with three characters with different roles that could fit within it. I was given the genre Steampunk, and my three characters are an inventor/mechanic, a robot ruler, and a young boy who scavenges parts for the mechanic.
Rough ideas for the mechanic/inventor.
The mechanic - An older woman who builds and repairs robots, as well as making and mending prosthetic limbs for people from robot scraps.
Robot ruler - Wears clothing to seem more human, but leaves large parts exposed. Has spiderwebs and dust on them from spending long periods of time not moving.
Scavenger boy - One way for the poorer community in this world to make a living is to find and sell old metal parts to mechanics/inventors.

Character Design: Morticia Addams/Clown

My challenge for this character design class was to draw a clown with the personality of Morticia Addams. First I narrowed down traits I associate with Morticia Addams; gothic, sensual and elegant. I then imagined these traits in the form of a clown.
After talking to Justin, we discussed how to make the design more elegant and feel more like Morticia.
I tried to replicate Morticia's iconic dress using big, baggy trousers and pointed shoes, and Justin suggested having her hair swept back as above, so it was both over the top and clown-like, while still being elegant.

Character Design: Perspective and Storyboards

Showing mood and character using perspective and shapes.

Storyboard about a day trip, in which a family get caught in traffic on their way to somewhere. The mother smiles sweetly at her husband before getting a missile launcher out the boot of the car and removing the traffic ahead.

Character Design: Props and Objects

This week we were given a character and told to design props this character might have if they had a Batman style utility belt. My character was Link, and as someone who's never played a Legend of Zelda game, all my designs were based off this image:

Weapons (and skateboard) based on Link.
For the second half of the lesson we were each given a room and told to draw inanimate objects as characters.
