The Rolling Calf is a spirit in Jamaican folklore. They are believed to be the spirits of people (often butchers) who were wicked in their lifetime. The Rolling Calf always has the form of a bull, and is wrapped in chains that can be heard when they are nearby. They block the way of travelers (mostly at night), and chase them with the intention to cause harm.
I looked back on my original Tikbalang post, and decided to work more on the head. The old heads seemed to go the "zombie" route, which doesn't fit into the Tikbalang's mythology. The creature is described as "a tall, bony humanoid creature with the head and hooves of a horse and disproportionately long limbs", with a mane made of sharp spines. They're supposed to scare and play tricks on travelers, and are also thought to be guards of "elemental kingdoms". I decided to explore giving the Tikbalang the teeth of a pig (seen on the skull sketch, as well as making the front protruding teeth sharp and menacing. I wanted the creature to appear to be somewhere between physical and supernatural, appearing to almost be made of just skin and bones.
Looking back on an old post, I'd given all my skin ideas for the bukavac the wrong colouring for a lake dwelling creature. Fish, crocodiles and newts for the most part have paler underbellies and darker backs, so I went back with the new head design and did some new rough ideas for the bukavac's colouring and skin textures. The bukavac will appear black and white in its animation, but the journal may feature some roughly coloured sketches (either by adelaide or another explorer), I will put together some rough colouring ideas once the general tone and texture has been decided. Feedback is welcome and appreciated!
